Low Impact Group Fitness Instructor
Accountable to: Group Fitness Manager
Overview of Responsibilities
Deliver a safe, inclusive, and engaging class experience for members and guests with a focus on low impact movement. Lead a variety of low impact formats such as gentle strength, mobility, stretching, yoga-inspired movement, and balance-focused training. Classes should emphasize proper form, joint safety, and accessibility for participants of all fitness levels. Provide modifications and progressions to meet the needs of beginners, seniors, and individuals recovering from injury. Strive to make each class enjoyable and uplifting, becoming a highlight of participants’ day. Act as a positive role model by promoting healthy, sustainable fitness practices.
General Responsibilities
● Maintain proper certifications relevant to low impact group exercise formats.
● Foster a welcoming, supportive, and professional class environment.
● Respond to emails from the Group Fitness Manager in a timely manner.
● Attend staff meetings when scheduled.
● Abide by the 212 Employee Handbook and uphold facility standards.
● Ensure all class routines and equipment setups are safe and appropriate for low impact participants.
● Arrive at least 10 minutes prior to class for setup and to assist new participants.
● Provide hands-on guidance (when appropriate) to ensure correct and safe performance of exercises.
● Collaborate as a team player with other Group Fitness Instructors.
● Greet participants warmly, introduce new attendees, and make announcements when needed.
● Lead appropriate active warm-ups and gentle cool-downs.
● Use clear, concise, and consistent verbal and visual cues. Instructor Certifications and Qualifications
Preferred certifications may include:
● National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM)
● American Council on Exercise (ACE)
● Aerobics and Fitness Association of America (AFAA)
● Aquatic Exercise Association (AEA) (for water-based low impact classes)
● Group Exercise Certification (NETA)
● SilverSneakers, Chair Yoga, Arthritis Foundation, or other low impact specialty certifications
● CPR and AED certification Personal Qualities and Expectations
● Reliability, professionalism, and accountability.
● Compassion and patience when working with individuals with varying abilities.
● Ability to motivate participants while respecting physical limitations.
● Confidence in teaching while remaining approachable and supportive.
● Commitment to ongoing education in safe, effective, and low impact training practices.
● Positive attitude, team-focused mindset, and a passion for helping
members improve quality of life through movement.
Compensation Plan:
Non-exempt Part-time position
Hourly compensation for Group exercise instructors includes class instruction, and other commission base services including time required for client communication (ie: schedule & confirm appointment times), planning time (ie: workout creation, music or choreography creation) room/equipment set-up, preparation and clean-up.
Starting Pay: $15/hr
